Admission to the PhD (in Economics, Finance or in Management)
Entry to the PhD programmes in Economics, Finance and
Management
To enter the PhD programme (dissertation stage) all applicants
must be in possession of or in the process of completing a
research oriented master's degree in a relevant field of study
and demonstrate a sufficient level of English language ability.
Although some candidates do gain direct admission to the
UPF PhD programmes after obtaining master's degrees from other
universities, historically, almost all entrants to the PhD
programmes completed the appropiate master degrees at UPF.
Before formally registering for the PhD, candidates are typically
required to complete a year of coursework , the so called
Master of Research in Economics, Finance and Management
(MRes). This is a 60 ECTS full time master's programme
designed to develop social scientists well versed in a range
of research techniques and methods, in addition to having
an in-depth knowledge of a particular area. Course selection
will be decided together with a tutor and depending on the
research interests of the students.
For most students, obtaining a PhD takes five years:
Year 1: MSc in Economics, Finance or Management
Year 2: MRes
Years 3 through 5: PhD programme work in dissertation
The deadline for application to the program is April 16,
2012. After this date, students' completed applications will
be considered by an academic committee. The committee will
take into account:
- academic performance
- the strength of the research proposal (this should be
a concise statement of issues of interests: importance,
history, and candidate's approach- less than 4 typed pages)
- reference letters (for external applicants)
Final decisions will be communicated via email by the end
of April, and will include both admission to the PhD (or the
MRes) and financial aid.
How to apply (from January 9, 2012 on):
All applications must be made on the GPEFM application form
provided by the Programme:
Applications should be accompanied by:
- a letter with the evidence of having completed graduate
work (transcript with courses taken and grades obtained)
