Accommodations

We have not blocked any hotel rooms for the conference.  We recommend booking directly through Expedia,
Hotels.com etc.    June is peak season so book as soon as possible.

There are no hotels next to the University, but there are plenty within a 15-20 minute walking distance or
a 5-minute taxi ride. Moreover, the city center (the right side of the Barrio Gotico or the Old Quarter, and the Eixample
are adjacent to the University) is a much nicer place to stay.

Here is a map of nearby hotels from Expedia:

The closest hotel is Hotel Arts but is super-luxe.

If you want to stay nearer to the center (my recommendation), within a 10-15 minute walking range are
Hotel Ciutat de Barcelona  (#11 in the map)

Catalonia Princesa on c/ Rec Comtal (#9 on the map and on the map below)

Princesa Catalonia

Like wise,  Chic &Basic Born (# 6 on the map) is also very close.

Within a 20-minute walking distance or a 10-minute Metro (<1 Euro) or taxi ride (<5 Euros)
are the hotels numbered
1 (Boria Bcn),
2 (H10 Montcada),
5 (Laietana Palace),
7 (Confortel Almirante) and
8 (Grand Hotel Central).

All are on Via Laietana, from which, if you are walking to the Univ, you take calle Princesa, and loop over the Parc
on calle Pujades and then come down on Wellington. And by Metro, Metro Jaume1 is a few minutes down on
Via Laietana and the stop Ciutadella/Vila Olimpica is  2 stops on the Yellow line.

If you want to splurge, the best nearby hotels are
Hotel Majestic
Hotel Palace (#3)
Ritz Roger de Lluria (#12; there are two Ritzes, this is the more affordable Ritz)

Going the other way, if you are on a tight budget and just want a place to crash, there are
a large number of Pensiones.  They are not bad, and can be had from 50 Euros a night.  However, it is best
to get a guidebook as they dont have web sites.

Finally, if you are coming with your family and want a larger place, you can rent an apartment for a short period in
the center. It works out cheaper and a lot more convenient with kids.
There are many sites for such apartment rentals -- one nice site is: www.desigbarcelona.com

Finally, Barcelona is  relatively a very safe city. However, watch out for pickpockets (and the occasional purse-snatchers), especially
in the tourist areas around the Barrio Gotico.  Some minimal precautions on your part will avoid a trauma
and many headaches.
