A study of José García Montalvo and Marta Reynal-Querol shows the connection between the level of education of political leaders of a country and its economic development

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=3

A study of José García Montalvo and Marta Reynal-Querol, faculty of the Department of Economics and Business of the UPF, shows the connection between the level of education of political leaders of a country and its economic development. The main conclusion of the study published in The Economic Journal (August 2011) by Marta Reynal-Querol and José García Montalvo was that countries ruled by leaders with university formation thrive more than those governed by politicians without higher academic education.

In reaching this conclusion, the researchers analyzed data from all countries in the world and its leaders from 1875 since 2004. Their results applied to the Spanish State conclude that Spain has a weak political system that prevents the most qualified people from ruling the country.

The study is among the eight finalists works selected by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Vanguardia of the Science Award, a joint initiative of Grupo Godó and Catalunya Caixa to support the research of excellence and to reward the best scientific research in the State during the 2011.

People who wish to participate in the Vanguardia of the Science Award, choosing one of the eight finalists nominated, can do it through the La Vanguardia website until February 29th, voting for the best scientific research in the State during 2011.

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=23

Rosemarie Nagel, ICREA Research Professor of the Department of Economics and Business (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), together with John Duffy (University of Pittsburgh) and Frank Heinemann (Technische Universität Berlin), organized the 4 days Barcelona LeeX Experimental Economics Summer School in Macroeconomics, which was offered on Universitat Pompeu Fabra from June 6 to 9.

In this intensive course, students from different nationalities were taught experimental methods and asked to develop their own experimental macroeconomic projects. This edition of the Summer School was followed by the 2nd LeeX International Conference on Theoretical and Experimental Macroeconomics, which took place on 10th and 11th June at the Ciutadella Campus of Pompeu Fabra University. Keynote speakers were Jean-Robert Tyran (University of Vienna) and Jordi Gali (CREI UPF). This two day conference was an effort to demonstrate that macroeconomics can also be an experimental discipline, which implied a strong collaboration between macroeconomic theorists and experimentalists.

A study of Hans-Joaquim Voth and Nico Voigtländer seeking the historical roots of anti-Semitism in medieval Germany

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=25

Hans-Joachim Voth, ICREA professor of the Department of Economics and Business of the UPF, joint with Nico Voigtländer, a researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and PhD in Economics from the UPF, have published in the Working Papers Series of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), an online paper in seeking the historical roots of anti-Semitism of Nazi Germany. They prove that in medieval Germany there was a history of persecution and violence against the Jewish people.

The authors start from the premise of how cultural traits are persistent over time. Their research confirms that xenophobia against the Jewish people has persisted in certain parts of Germany since the Middle Ages to the Nazis, that is, for over five hundred years.
The European Business History Association (link below), was created in 1994. It gathers some three hundred scholars from all over the world that share their common research interest in European business history. Its main activity is the organization of an annual conference that has been running uninterruptedly since 1998. Although every conference is open to the best research done in European business history, there is also a conference theme that changes every year. The theme aims at focusing the research attention within and outside EBHA. The keynote speech and the prize for the best paper presented at the annual conference are also related to the theme. In Glasgow it was "Business beyond the firm". Next one will be focused on "Business, Finance and the State in 20th Century Europe: Crises and Transformation"; and the next to "Tensions between Global and Local". On top of its regular activities, EBHA organizes a doctoral summer school every other year, publishes a newsletter, awards prizes to the best doctoral dissertations in European Business history and supports research in the field.

Albert Carreras was a member of the first elected EBHA Council for the period 1997-2000. In 2004 he organized, jointly with Matthias kipping, the annual EBHA conference in Barcelona (16th-18th September 2004: http://www.econ.upf.edu/ebha2004/). He was elected again to Council membership for 2005-2008. In 2007 he was elected Vice-president for 2008-2009, and in 2009 he was elected President for 2010-2011. During his tenure he will chair the Glasgow 2010 and the Athens 2011 conferences, and he will supervise the preparation of the next one (Paris, 2012), jointly organized with the Business History Society of Japan.

He is also the current Chairman of the Research Council of the European University Institute, in Florence; Vice-President of the Spanish Economic History Association ("Asociación Española de Historia Económica") and a member of the External advisory Board of the Instituto de Ciências Sociais, in Lisbon. He is a member of the editorial board of the journals Business History, Enterprise and Society, Revista de Historia Económica - Journal of Iberian and Latin American Economic History and Revista de Historia Industrial.

Antoni Calvo, Ph.D. from the GPEFM of our department (Class of 2000), and brilliant young economist, passed away

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=81

Antoni Calvó passed away suddenly last Saturday at his home in Barcelona at the age of 37. Toni obtained his doctoral degree in the UPF's GEPFM programme in 2000 and taught Economia Urbana from 2002 to 2004. Presently he was a Senior ICREA Research Professor at UAB. Toni was one of the most promising young economists of Catalonia.

His scientific career was spectacular. In the last 4 years he had published in the Journal of Political Economy , American Economic Review (2), Journal of Economic Theory (2), Econometrica , Journal of Public Economics and International Economic Review, among others. He had articles pending of publication in Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Theory and Journal of the European Economic Association. He was Associate Editor of the Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of the European Economic Association and Spanish Economic Review. He is survived by his wife, Goretti, and his two sons Yan and Tomàs, ages 6 and 3. His colleagues, friends and students will miss his creativity, enthusiasm, intelligence and passion.

OBITUARIO: IN MEMORIAN (Published in EL PAIS)

Xavier Freixas has received the prize to the Review of Financial Studies best paper of 2006 for his paper joint with Patrick Bolton "Corporate
Finance and the Monetary Transmission Mechanism".

The paper explores first the structure of bank finance and market finance of an economy and then turns to analyse the impact of capital
regulation on bank funding and the cost of credit. We show that multiple equilibria exist, so that the impact of monetary policy could be
difficult to predict if it leads to a switch from one equilibrium to another.

Vicente Cuñat, finance professor of the Department of Economics and Business of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra has been awarded with the Jaime Fernández de Araoz prize for an article entitled "Globalization and the provision of incentives inside the firm" written jointly with Professor María Guadalupe of Columbia University.

The prize, sponsored by Banco Santander and Universia, has the objective to contribute to the development of corporate finance knowledge, both from a research point of view but also from the point of view of practitioners.

The research associated to the prize is an empirical study of how do firms shape their executive pay policies to the competitive environment in which they operate. The results show that those firms that face higher international competition pay higher average salaries, associate more pay to performance, have a higher wage dispersion within the firm, have a higher demand and reward for talent and are more aggressive in their firing and hiring policies. Overall, the results point out in the direction that the sensitivity of firm performance to the correct or incorrect decisions of its employees grows with international competition, being the reaction of the firms to offer a higher demand and reward of their effort and ability.

Antoni Sureda, a PhD student at the UPF Graduate Program in Economics, Finance, and Management, has received a grant from the Fundación Banco Herrero to carry out a research project on the transactions done by managers on their own firm stocks, known as Insider Trading. In this study, which will be included in his PhD dissertation, Sureda analyzes the effects of grating insider trading rights to managers as a component of their compensation packages.

Antoni Sureda-Gomila (Manacor, 1978) earned his BSc in Mathematics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (class of 1996-2000) and his MSc in Economics at UPF (class 2002-2003). Currently he is a PhD candidate at UPF Graduate Program in Economics, Finance, and Management (GPEFM) and enjoys a FPI grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. Last year, Sureda spent six months at the Economics Department of Harvard University working on his dissertation, "Essays on the behaviour and regulation of Insider Trading".

The Fundación Banco Herrero annually issues 10 grants to promote scientific research in social sciences. A couple of years ago, Judit Monturiol, another GPEFM student who currently has a position at Univesitat Autònoma de Barcelona, also received one of these grants.

The ninth edition of Barcelona Macroeconomics Summer School, organised by CREI, will offer courses on the latest advances in macroeconomics

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=92

The ninth edition of CREI's Barcelona Macroeconomics Summer School (BMSS 2007) will be held on the main campus of Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona during the period June 18-29, 2007. BMSS 2007 will offer a variety of courses taught by recognised experts in their fields such as Fabio Canova, Antonio Ciccone, Jordi Galí, Xavier Sala-i-Martín, Jaume Ventura and Hans-Joachim Voth. The courses will cover recent developments in different areas of macroeconomics, including growth, international finance, monetary and fiscal policy, macroeconometrics and economic geography.

The courses are aimed at graduate students specializing in macroeconomics, as well as faculty members or researchers willing to brush up their knowledge of the field and expose themselves to the latest advances in academic research. During the courses, the BMSS faculty will be available to participants for discussion of research ideas and projects. Since its beginnings, BMSS has been very popular with foreign researchers. Last year's edition, for example, attracted some 130 economists and only 15% of these were affiliated to Spanish institutions, with the rest working for European Union or international institutions.

Jordi Galí, director of and researcher at CREI, considers that "BMSS is a pioneering event and unique in this country both in regard of a number of editions held and also the advance level of the courses imparted". Galí add "the courses are aimed at experts in macroeconomics such as people who work at universities, central banks, government agencies, and year after year, we are surprised by the great number of applications received". At the 2006 edition, 47 researchers were from universities, 49 from central banks, 15 from private companies, 13 from government agencies and 5 from research centres.

Laboratori d'Economia Experimental (LeeX) of UPF will organize the first summer school in experimental macroeconomics

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=94

Macroeconomic theories have traditionally been tested using non-experimental "field" data. However, modern, micro-founded macroeconomic models can also be tested in the laboratory, and researchers have begun to pursue such experimental tests. This June, graduate students specializing in macroeconomics or experimental economics, as well as junior faculty members and researchers of macroeconomic are invited to attend the first ever summer school devoted to experimental macroeconomics research.

The intensive 5-day summer school will be offered at Universitat Pompeu Fabra from June 18-22, 2007. Students will be taught experimental methods and exposed to a number of macroeconomic applications that have been tested experimentally. Students will be asked to participate in experiments and to develop their own experimental macroeconomic projects. Faculty will assist with and critique these projects.

Professors to summer school in experimental macroeconomics are John Duffy (University of Pittsburgh, USA), Frank Heinemann (Technische Universität Berlin, Germany) and Rosemarie Nagel (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain).

The deadline for applications is 15 April 2007. More information in http://leex.upf.edu/bleess07.htm

Teresa Garcia-Milà, professor of Economics at UPF, will be named independent advisor to Banc de Sabadell

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=95

Teresa Garcia-Milà, professor of Economics at the Department of Economics and Business of UPF, will be appointed to the Board of Directors of Banc de Sabadell at the next shareholders' general meeting, to be held at the end of March. Garcia-Milà will join the bank's steering committee in the role of independent advisor and will fill the place of Juan Manuel Desvalls, who is retiring. With her appointment the number of directors will remain at twelve. This new incorporation of an academic nature contrasts with the two previous appointments who came from the field of business: Isak Andic from Mango and José Manuel Lara Bosch from Grup Planeta.

Garcia-Milà, who gained a doctorate in 1987 from the University of Minnesota, has been professor at the Department of Economics and Business of UPF since 1995 and researcher at Centre de Recerca en Economia Internacional (CREI) since 1999. Amongst other positions, Garcia-Milà is also advisor to Enagas, economic coordinator at Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Perspectiva (ANEP) and member of the board of directors of the Cercle d'Economia.

For the shareholders who attend the general meeting on March 29, the appointment of Garcia-Mila will not be the only news. The financial group, presided by Josep Oliu, will propose splitting the shares by a proportion of 4 to 1, trying to give the shares greater liquidity and also hoping to attract new shareholders. With this split, the nominal value of a Banc de Sabadell share will change from 0.5 euros to 0.125 euros.

Innovative Methodological Tools on Macroeconomics in a new book by Fabio Canova

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=96

According to Fabio Canova, Professor at the Department of Economics and Business of Pompeu Fabra University, macroeconomists have made huge advances in the past 20 years in the mathematical, statistical, and computational tools available to them. These developments have added greatly to the way in which researchers test models and validate theories in the field. In the forthcoming publication of his new book, Methods for Applied Macroeconomic Research (Princeton University Press), Canova will be among the first to deal with econometric, computational and macroeconomics substantive issues together rather than treating each one individually.

Canova's book which he worked on for 4 years, was released at the beginning of February and it makes a significant contribution to macroeconomic inquiry with the introduction of a comprehensive, unified set of techniques to approach the problem of estimating economic models and testing whether they are adequate for policy purposes. It is unique in that it begins with a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium, then finds an approximate linear representation for the decision rules and describes methods needed to estimate their parameters, examining their fit to the data.

Of his new work, Canova says "it is somewhat unusual because it combines materials from different fields and tries to give practical hints that people do not usually find." As a result, the book is especially useful to economists in academia as well as professional macroeconomists in banking and finance, industry, and government.

Commenting on Canova's new work, Thomas Sargent of New York University says, "This book is unprecedented among econometrics books for the way it incorporates careful and sophisticated macroeconomic theory. It is unprecedented among books on dynamic macroeconomics for its level of practical statistical advice and econometric sophistication. There is simply nothing close to this book available."

Canova received his PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 1988 and is involved with research in Monetary Economics, Time Series Economics and Forecasting, and Growth Policies. In 1998 he was inducted into the Econometric Hall of Fame (Econometric Theory), and in 1999 was inducted into the Applied Econometric Hall of Fame (Journal of Applied Econometrics).

Currently, Canova is an ICREA (Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies) Research Professor at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona and a Fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research in London. He is a member of the Academic Committee and Director of the GPEFM PhD Program at the Department of Economics and Business of UPF, one of the two reference PhD programs of the future Barcelona GSE.

Professor Jaume Puig-Junoy receives an award from the University of Costa Rica

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=98

The first edition of the "Dr. Anna Gabriela Ross" award, given by the Economics Faculty of the University of Costa Rica (UCR), has been awarded to Jaume Puig-Junoy, professor at the Department of Economics and Business of UPF and post-graduate professor of Economics at said UCR. The prize is in recognition of his teaching and research carried out in the field of Health Economics in Costa Rica since the year 2000. The award has given on the 10th of January, 2007, by the Costa Rica Health Minister, Maria Luisa Ávila, in an event held at the UCR Economics Faculty.

At the prize-giving ceremony, Jaume Puig-Junoy said that Health Economy contributes towards improving the quality of health services by strengthening the decision-making process in the corresponding public policies. Puig-Junoy added that "within the health sector, the most important investment is in human capital and we must take into account the age and health distribution of a country's population". Furthermore he insisted on the need to evaluate medical technologies and medicines according to the life expectancy and quality of life of patients, so as to garantie and improve their welfare.

Professor Jaume Puig-Junoy gained his doctorated in Economics at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1991 with a doctorated thesis entitled "Growth, employment and technology in the Spanish hospital sector", a work which was published under this title by Generalitat de Catalunya in 1993. Between 1983 and 1991, he occupied various posts in Catalan Public Health Administration. In 1992 he joined the Department of Economics and Business of UPF, initially as a visiting professor and from 1999 onwards as a professor of Economics.

The Department of Economic and Business reaches the significant number of 1,000 Working Papers with an empirical study on the impact of terrorism on democratic elections

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=99

The working paper, written by professor José García Montalvo, empirically shows that the terrorist attacks in Madrid on the 11th of March, 2004, changed the final results of the general elections, held three days later.

Economists have recently turned their attention to the effects of terrorism. One much debated effect of terrorist attacks is its impact on the results of democratic elections. José Garcia Montalvo uses the electoral consequences of the terrorist attacks of the 11-M in Madrid to analyze this issue. He considers this particular experiment since the attack took place only three days before the 2004 Congressional Election, which allows the use of credible identification criteria. In particular, he uses the advance voting by Spanish residents abroad, who cast their vote before the terrorist attack, to identify the effect of the bombing. He exploits this macabre natural experiment to run a difference-in-differences estimation using data on three consecutive Congressional elections. His empirical results indicate that a terrorist attack can have a large impact on the outcome of democratic elections.

With this subject of great social interest, the Department of Economic and Business of UPF has reached the landmark of a 1,000 working papers. Over the 16 years of the department's existence, professors and visiting professors of the department have written a thousand studies covering very different subjects with economic research as the bases of theses projects.

1000 working papers in such a short time represents an important volume of research. Taking into account this short period of existence and the number of its professors, the Department of Economic and Business of UPF is one of the most productive in Spain and Europe in terms of quality economic research. In the latest edition (December, 2006) of the Spanish Economic Review, there appears a ranking of the scientific production of the Economics Departments in Spain and the Department of UPF holds first place in accordance with all three established methodologies. After UPF, in this ranking come Departamento de Economía de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Departament d'Economia i Història Econòmica de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in either 2nd. or 3rd. place depending on methodology applied in establishing the classification.

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=100

The three UPF professors are affiliated with the recent initiative "INSIDE" ("Investigaciones sobre inmigración y desarrollo), launched by the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE, CSIC) and whose aim is to promote research in the field of immigration economics, with a particular emphasis on contributions relevant for the Spanish case (www.inside.org.es).

Ghazala Azmat and Libertad González received funding for their project "The Effects of the Spanish Tax Credit for Mothers on the Labor Supply and Fertility of Immigrants". This project's goal is to evaluate the effects of the 2003 reform in the Spanish income tax on fertility and female participation, with a focus on the differential effect on native versus immigrant women.

The project by Libertad González and Francesc Ortega, "How Have Spanish Regions Adjusted to Recent Immigration?", seeks to understand how the Spanish economy has adjusted to recent immigration flows, focusing on labor market effects, sectoral composition and technology adoption.

The two projects were presented at the first INSIDE Workshop, which took
place at the Institute for Economic Analysis, CSIC, on January 12, 2007. The workshop gathered together some of the leading scholars in the analysis of the economic causes and consequences of immigration in Spain. The keynote seminar was given by Gianmarco Ottaviano, from the University of Bologna.

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=101

According to a recent work published in the Spanish Economic Review ("Publishing performance of Spanish academics: 1970-2004", David Rodríguez, December 2006), the Department of Economics and Business (DEB-UPF) is ranked first according to the most commonly used ranking methodologies. Furthermore, several researchers which have been affiliated to the department during its brief history are among the most productive and cited.

According to the three different methodologies which have been proposed to rank European economics departments with respect to scientific production, this study reports that the DEB-UPF is ranked first during the period 1985-2004 and more recent subperiods within this larger period (even despite the fact that it started operation in 1991).

With respect to individual researchers based in Spanish institutions, even despite the fact that the study is run only until 2004, eight researchers which hold or have held positions at the DEB-UPF appear as the most productive and cited : Fabio Canova, Jordi Galí, Albert Marcet, Andreu Mas-Colell, Ramon Marimon, Massimo Motta, Gilles Saint-Paul and Xavier Sala i Martin.

Albert Carreras, professor of Economic History and Institutions at our Economics and Business Department, has been nominated to the Prince of Asturias Distinguished Visiting Professorship for Spanish Studies at Georgetown University (Washington DC, United States), a position he will hold during the 2007-2008 academic year. Albert Carreras will teach three courses in undergraduate and graduate programs at the highly renowned Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.

The chair is attached to the BMW Center for German & European Studies, a center of excellence, within the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, funded in 1990 thanks to a grant from the German Government, and dedicated to interdisciplinary studies on European issues. In this framework, he will be expected to promote the study of Spain's economy and history within a broader European, American and international context.

Albert Carreras was selected for the post among the pool of applicants: Spanish university professors from the humanities and the social sciences, broadly considered, with teaching and research experience in an English-based environment. The selection committee included two professors from Spanish Universities nominated by the Spanish Education and Science Minister, the vice-chancellor of a Spanish University, two professors from Georgetown University and a representative of Fundación Endesa. This committee proposed a short list to Georgetown University, from which Albert Carreras was chosen.

In his book 'Efectos y abordajes de la dependencia: un análisis económico', David Casado, professor at the Department of Economics and Business, studies the consequences that the ageing population might have on the finantial stability of public pension plans and healthcare. As it happens, the publication of this book coincides with the implementation of the new 'Llei de Dependència', a state act which, from now until 2015, will provide help and facilities to those people who are unable to look after themselves.

Over the last few decades, the population of developed countries have experienced an unprecedented process of ageing. The reason for this are common to all countries. Firstly, a marked drop in the birth-rate, and also a longer life-span due to factors such as medical advances and improved nutrition and living conditions. The challenge we now face is how to efficiently manage the available public services to address the new social situation.

Casado's book analizes the key questions we must consider to achieve optimum management of health care resources. The phenomenon of the ageing population creates a heavy dependence on the public health system which, in turn, has a great impact on public health funding.

'Efectos y abordajes de la dependencia: un análisis económico' is the 18th title of a collection about Health Economics and Management, directed by Vicente Ortún from CRES ( Reseach Center on Economy and Health). The collection, currently published by Masson-Elseiver and with a print-run of 3.000-4.000, aims to disseminate research applied to problems of health policy and management with an European perspective. Often, these are collective works which include the participation of well-known academics from other countries under the direction of a CRES member.

CRES, which belongs to Department of Economics and Business, aim is to develop a better understanding of the linkage between Health and Economics, from an academic perspective. The claim is to help somehow in the improvement of Health Services Management and Health Policy.

Enriqueta Camps receives a grant from Instituto de la Mujer to continue investigating issues of gender, human capital and development

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=104

The working group leaded by Enriqueta Camps, an Economic History professor at UPF, have received a grant from Instituto de la Mujer, an entity forming part of Ministerio de Trabajo y Asuntos Sociales from the Spanish Government. This subsidy will allow Ms. Camps to continue the lines of research that she began during her near two-year placement at the Economics Department of Harvard University (from January 2005 to August 2006).

The project, which is initially planned for 3 years, aims to analyse the impact of gender inequality regarding access to human capital (health and education) on economic development. The research is based on comparative data and analysis from Latin America, Northern Africa, Europe and Asia during the 20th. Century. This project, which bears the title "Gender, human capital and inequality: a comparative perspective", will be a continuation of the three Working Papers that Enriqueta Camps wrote during her leave at Harvard: 1.Globalization and wage inequality in South and East Asia, and Latin America: a gender approach (joint with M.Camou, N.Mora-Sitja, S. Maubrigades). 2 Poverty and children's work in 19th. and 20 th. century Spain and nowadays developing countries. First results. 3 "The impact of women's educational and economic resources on fertility. Spanish birth cohorts 1901-1950" (joint with P. Baizán).

The working group, headed by Enriqueta Camps from UPF, is formed by Li Han from Harvard University (USA), Natàlia Mora-Sitja from Cambrigde University (United Kingdom), Jordi Domenech from York University (United Kingdom), Angelique Janssens from Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen (Netherlands), Maria Camou and Silvana Maubrigades from Universidad de la República (Uruguay).

Abstract of the project

Equity in access to consumer foodstuffs, health services and education are fundamental to the development of women's capabilities, their freedom and empowerment, and their economic decision-making, something important to understand the final market power of women. These are crucial towards guaranteeing a greater welfare and well being in the marriage contract and family life.

Not only does women's health and education act in their own benefit but also in that of their children. The mother's education is fundamental to the formation of new human capital. Less quantity and more quality of younger generations are key factors to stimulate the economic growth of poor countries. Women's education, therefore, is one of the means to escape from the poverty trap. However this process is complex and the ways of promoting women's and girl's education depend on the culture of each country, which is why the project has a comparative approach. The project also aims to further study the impact of globalization on women's final market power. Globalization, in promoting market exposure is contemporaneously a means to increase market power. This last fact is the reason why not gendered measures of waged income inequality decrease as a result of globalizing forces.

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=105

The launch of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Barcelona GSE) was announced today, by its founder and President, Professor Andreu Mas-Colell. The institution will be a centre of excellence in advanced economics studies, offering postgraduate courses in Economics and Social Sciences - all taught in English. Academic activities are due to begin in September 2007, under the supervision of the school's Scientific Council. This is composed of twenty-eight leading Economics and Social Science academics and includes ten Nobel Laureate Economists.

Joaquín Almunia, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, will head the schools board as President of Honour. Hugo Sonnenschein, former President of the University of Chicago, has been appointed as President of the Scientific Council and the Political Scientist, Eduard Vallory, will serve as Managing Director.

Andreu Mas-Colell, President of the Barcelona GSE and Professor of Economics at the Pompeu Fabra University, feels the initiative is great news for Barcelona: "the city has found its place within in the highest tier of Economics education. The Barcelona GSE is set to be a world class institution of the highest esteem".

Mas-Colell stresses: "Barcelona GSE will embody four key values: academic excellence, a favourable environment, competitive costs - in comparison with other similar programmes in Europe - and finally, the innovative dynamism of a young institution with optimum potential for growth".

At the outset Barcelona GSE will offer five Masters Programmes, aimed at international graduates preparing for a career in management, or wishing to pursue a career in academic research. The Masters Programmes will be taught full time over the course of a year.

The Masters course programmes for 2007/08 will be announced this December. It is hoped that over the next five years a further fifteen Masters Programmes, focused around Economics and Social Sciences, will be established at Barcelona GSE.

The establishment of Barcelona GSE was feasible only with the support of a number of public and private bodies. The board will be composed of representatives from these organisations. They include: The Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), The Superior Council of Scientific Research (CSIC), The International Economics Research Centre (CREI), The Agbar Group, Banc Sabadell, Caixa Catalunya, "La Caixa" and the FemCAT Foundation.

ACCID has recognized professors of UPF Llorenç Bagur and Josep Lluís Boned for their doctorate theses

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=106

The Associació Catalana de Comptabilitat i Direcció (ACCID) has
recognized Llorenç Bagur and Josep Lluís Boned, assistant professors of
Department of Economy and Business at UPF, for their doctoral
theses. At the 3rd. edition of ACCIDs Awards and Grants Ceremony,
there were also prizes for Salvador Alemany, for his professional
career, and for Teresa Buira for her academic excellence and also for
La Diputació de Barcelona for good working practices in financial
information.

The awards ceremony was held on the 18th. of October and brought
together over 200 accountants at Casa Llotja de Mar in Barcelona. The
ceremony, organized by ACCID and La Cambra de Comerç de Barcelona,
also included the conference entitled Nou Pla General de
Comptabilitat: principals canvis i impacte en lempresa catalana by
Oriol Amat, vice-president of ACCID and professor at UPF.

Llorenç Bagurs thesis
This thesis studies the techniques related to management accounting
currently used in local corporations and examines why these
organizations do not use the available accounting tools. The thesis
shows that local corporations can operate more efficiently with the
implementation of said tools and also offers a model to follow in
order to improve the chances of success of these management
techniques.

Josep Lluís Boneds thesis
Spanish public universities are undergoing great demographic, economic
and social changes. And also they have to standardize their
qualifications according to pan-European criteria. These changes
should affect systems of management and organization which have
traditionally been unreliable and difficult to adapt. Given this
situation, the thesis studies current management systems employed by
these institutions and examines which factors contribute to the
success or failure of their implementation.

Jean Tirole gives the Economics Lecture 2006/2007This French economist is considered one of the main experts on market regulation and competition

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=107

Jean Tirole, scientific director of Institute dEconomie Industrielle
(IDEI) of the University of Toulouse 1 and professor of Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT), gave this year's Economics Lecture which
opened the 2006-2007 course at the Faculty of Economics and Business
of Universitat Pompeu Fabra. On the 11th of October, Prof. Tirole gave a
lecture entitled "Platform industries: how telecoms, software, credit
cards, media and videogames differ from other markets, and what it
means for the future of the economy."

Born in France in 1953, Jean Tirole achieved his doctorate in
Economics at MIT (1981) and has become a scientist of great
international acclaim. His research stands out, above all, for the
influence it has had on the decision-making processes of the majority
of regulatory bodies, public administrations, consultancies and
international private companies.

A great expert on regulation, his papers have made it easier to
understand the workings of markets with imperfect competition and how
efficient regulations should be designed. In some European Countries,
such as Spain, Tirole has advised on how to introduce competition into
sectors such as electricity or telecommunications, which have
traditionally been dominated by monopolies.

Recently Tirole has embarked on a new line of research which attempts
to define the relationship between psychology and economics. He
analyses human behaviour from the perspective of economic theory.

Tirole has written over a hundred papers for the most prestigious
economic and financial publications in the world and has also written
eight books which have become reference manuals in all economics
faculties. His most outstanding books include The Theory of Industrial
Organisation, Game Theory (with Drew Fudenberg), A Theory of
Incentives in Procurement and Regulation (with Jean-Jacques Laffont),
The Prudential Regulation of Banks (with Mathias Dewatripont), and
Competition in Telecommunications (with Jean-Jacques Laffont).

He has received numerous awards for his research into the theories of
regulation and incentives. Tirole was president of the Econometric
Society (1998) and of the European Economic Association
(2002). Besides, Jean Tirole received a Doctorate Honoris Causa from
the Free University in Brussels in 1989, the Yrjö Jahnsson prize of
the European Economic Association in 1993, and the Public Utility
Research Center Distinguished Service Award (University of Florida) in
1997. He is a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences (1993) and of the American Economic Association
(1993). He has also been a Sloan Fellow (1985) and a Guggenheim Fellow
(1988).

The International Economic History Association awards Mar Rubio the prize for Best Doctoral Thesis on 20th century Economic History

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=108

Mar Rubio, assistant
professor of economic history at UPF and researcher with a
Juan de la Cierva grant, receives from the International Economic
History Association (IEHA) the prize for Best Doctoral Thesis on 20th
century Economic History produced in the last four years. The prize
was awarded on August 25th at the 14th International Conference of
Economic History held in Helsinki.

The IEHA Conference, held every four years, offers three prizes: Best
Doctoral Thesis on 20th century Economic History, Best Doctoral
Thesis on 19th century Economic History and Best Doctoral Thesis on
Medieval and Modern Economic History. All the theses presented must
have been written in the four years previous to the congress. In the
latest edition 60 theses were presented, 20 per category. The judges
select a short list of 4 theses per category which must then be
presented publicly by their authors at the conference. Finally, a panel
decides on the three winning theses. Rubio won the 20th century
category.

Mar Rubio's doctoral thesis, read at the London School of Economics in
2002, is based on the study of national accounts of two
petrol-producing countries, Mexico and Venezuela, over the 20th
century. The thesis aims to be a pioneering examination of the
efficiency and utility of environmental accounting as a tool of
long-term economic analysis.

Environmental accounting demonstrates that prosperity based on the
exhaustion of natural resources may well be a mirage. Traditional
national accounts ignore the fact that natural resources stocks are
diminishing. From an environmental perspective, this omission tends to
exaggerate incomes, encourages unsustainable consumption and
gives a false impression of the economic health of these
countries. Furthermore, the history of petrol-producing countries is
full of references based on widely different premises, which come to
conclusions similar to those recently reached with environmental
accounting. The thesis is the result of combining these two
literatures and taking advantage of the resulting synergies.

The Consolidating Economics project, headed by Andreu Mas-Colell, receives six million euros to promote economics research

http://www.econ.upf.edu/en/department/news.php?id=109

Mas-Colell, professor of Departament of Economics and Business of UPF,
is the coordinating-researcher. The Consolidating Economics (CE)
project will receive a grant of six million euros over five
years to consolidate and enhance the impact of economics research
carried out by researchers affiliated to Spanish institutions within an
international academic context.

This research project is the only one of seventeen
proposals selected by the Spanish Ministery of Education and Science
in the field of social sciences. The Spanish Ministery of
Education and Science has created the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 program,
aimed at leading Spanish research groups, to substantially improve the
R+D situation in Spain.

In particular, the CE project hopes to achieve an increase of 25%
-over the next five years- in the bibliometric impact of papers
written by members of the group in comparison with the previous five
years. This will be a considerable challenge if we take into account
that members of the CE group were responsible for writing the great
majority of the 58 papers originating from Spain and published in the
five most prestigious economics journals in the word during the
period 2001-2005.

Another important aim of the group is to develop the Barcelona
Graduate School of Economics, an institution intended to promote
postgraduate studies in economics in order to lead Europe in this
field and attract the best students and researchers in the world.

Therefore, to promote, project and organize Spanish economics research
will be the basic tasc of Consolidating Economics, a project
coordinated by Andreu Mas-Colell and comprising researchers from the
following institutions and groups:

· Departament d'Economia i Empresa (UPF)
· Centre de Recerca en Economia Internacional (CREI, UPF)
· Grups de Dret i Sociologia de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra
· Unitat de Fonaments de l'Ànalisi Econòmic (UAB)
· Institut d'Ànàlisi Econòmic (IAE, CSIC, Barcelona)
· Departament de Fonaments de l'Ànalisi Econòmic, Universitat d'Alacant
· Centro Sector Público-Privado de l'IESE, Barcelona
· Ciències Polítiques (CSIC, Barcelona)
· Departament d'Economia, Universitat Carlos III de Madrid
· Departament d'Empresa, Universitat Carlos III de Madrid
· Departament d'Historia Econòmica, Universitat Carlos III de Madrid
· Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros (CEMFI, Madrid)
· Fundación de Estudios de Economía Aplicada (FEDEA, Madrid)
