In this session, Astrid Salvans Tintoré will present the WeDreamBusiness Initiative. WeDreamBusiness.org is a web-based project aimed to promote ethical business practices worldwide. It is mainly oriented on students, showing a gallery of companies that have inspired them and made them dream that another business is possible. The companies showcased here provide evidence that ethics and profits can be successfully combined.

Late Lessons from Early Warnings: Why did industry not respond with precaution?

On April 19th, 2012, the European Environmental Agency launches the second volume of Late Lessons from Early Warnings.

This event follows the famous Environmental issue report No 22/2001 Late lessons from early warnings: the precautionary principle 1896-2000 which gathered available scientific information about the hazards of human economic activities and its use in taking action to better protect both the environment and the health of the species and ecosystems that are dependent on it, and then living with the consequences.

Like the first report, the second report is based on case studies and brings together experts in their particular field of environmental, occupational and consumer hazards.

With Julian Rode, we contributed to an article about the specific role of business actors in failing to respond with precaution to Early Warning Signals.

Rather than taking a blaming perspective, or one that would deny the difficulty that business actors face to combine their economic incentives with their values for precautionary actions, we review and analyze relevant interdisciplinary literature and prominent case studies – in particular those documented in Late Lessons from Early Warnings (EEA, 2001) – with the objective to better understand business decisions in the face of early warnings.

We show that economic motives are often driving non-precautionary decisions, but that they also influenced by a complex mix of epistemological, regulatory, cultural, and psychological aspects. We provide a set of lessons and reflections.

In this first meeting, the course and course method will be explained. Additionally, it will be communicated to students how to achieve a successful participation and learning outcome. An overview of the topics to be dealt with will be provided and students will be sensitized to the issues we will be touching upon.

Corruption & Obedience (Case Study and Discussion) (Seminar 7, May 29-30, 2012), 2011)

Summary

As a newly appointed manager of a production facility in Asia faces a corruption request from an official, he is not very sure about the practices and the consequences of carrying out the bribe. How should he behave in such a situation? Why? We follow this case study with a discussion on corruption, its perception, methods and consequences.

Failure – Fear - Fortitude

In this experiential session, participants learn about failures, fears and their role for future successes. We use the art of conversation, with others and within ourselves, to explore the surprising world of our shadows, and to eventually embrace our experiences beyond the imperative of being always successful in everything. We give a special emphasis to the distinctions between objectives and dreams, between professional success and self-accomplishment, and between individual and collective failures.

Targeted outcomes

• Increase awareness about failures and fears

• Develop participants power to manage fears and learn from failure

• Increase participants future resilience

Instructions for students

Reflect on the following question: “For you, is success the mere attainment of your goals?”. Write down a few private words with your answer.

As a world athlete in rock-climbing, a negotiator in the oil industry, an academic scholar researching the mathematical foundations of human choice, or a teacher about ethical values in business decision-making, I have continuously crossed borders to live my dreams and accomplish myself. Along the years, I became a specialist of the role of ethical values in business decision-making and I have been teaching and coaching executives across a wide range of critical topics.

Description

We embark participants in a series of questions, situations and phenomena which make salient their values, their decision-making processes and their leadership attitudes. A series of conceptual tools and frameworks helps participants to structure their understanding of values, leadership and decisions and prepare them to express their full potential when making decisions. We give a special emphasis to ethical values and the trade-offs they may entail in business decisions, with the intention of empowering participants to strive in the grey zone of (un)ethical business.

Targeted outcomes

• Increase awareness of the role of values in business decisions

• Develop framework and conceptual tools for facing conflicts of values

• Prepare to become inspirational leaders by your values
